Chanthaburi Pride

About the Pride

When people think of Chanthaburi, the first images that usually come to mind are a land of exquisite fruit orchards, gemstone markets, or the historic Chanthaboon Waterfront Community. However, over the past three years, Chanthaburi has transformed into far more than just a haven for fruits and jewels; it has established itself as a key destination on Thailand’s equality map through the movement known as "Chanthaburi Pride." The journey was not paved with rose petals. In its inaugural year, amidst uncertainty about local acceptance, the movement was ignited by the heart and courage of four key visionaries: Dr. Khemnat Naradech (Co-founder of Trans for Career Thailand), Mr. Ukrit Wongthongsali (President of the Chanthaburi Chamber of Commerce), Mr. Rittichai Yusoog (Chanthaburi Youth DJ Group), and Mr. Chayutphong Luangpoonsin (Rabbit Rainbow LGBTQ+ Group). Operating without government funding, the event relied solely on personal dedication, t-shirt sales, and local business support, driven by the goal of establishing inclusive gender-affirming health clinics. The sight of rainbow flags fluttering alongside tears of emotion that day broke the silence, proving Chanthaburi was ready to embrace every spectrum of diversity.

Over these three years, Chanthaburi Pride has flourished through a Creative Economy framework, reimagining local identity by weaving together gemstone heritage, agricultural richness, and human rights. A poignant example is the work of Mr. Issara Choophakdee, who elevated traditional "Chanthaboon reed mats"—often seen as ordinary household items—into contemporary, powerful fashion pieces. By seamlessly blending local wisdom with design, art, and creative tourism, the movement does more than host a festival; it breathes economic vitality into the community by driving revenue to local shops, hotels, and entrepreneurs. Moreover, Chanthaburi Pride has spurred profound structural changes:local administration became a pioneer in allowing civil servants to dress according to their gender identity; Benjamanusorn School established a safe environment by permitting students to wear uniforms and hairstyles matching their gender; and medical teams, such as Dr. Mariam and healthcare workers at Prapokklao Hospital, expanded inclusive healthcare and stigma-free blood donation services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Looking beyond Pride Month, the visionaries behind Chanthaburi Pride have integrated inclusivity into cultural celebrations throughout the year, most notably by creating "Thailand’s First Nighttime Songkran," combining pride energy with traditional festivities in a safe, dynamic space. What started as a courageous step by a small group has expanded into a powerful local network that demonstrates how community activism can create monumental social change. Ultimately, three years of progress have revealed that Chanthaburi’s most precious treasure is not its gems or fruits, but its open-hearted and empathetic people, who together are shaping Chanthaburi into a happy, safe, and equal city for everyone.
