  • Bow began by organizing community-focused parties before developing Goddess Bar into a safe space and community where women—especially sapphic and women-loving-women (WLW) communities—can confidently be themselves.
  • Bow believes Thailand has become significantly more open. Growing social acceptance and marriage equality reflect the country’s readiness to move toward WorldPride.
  • Through the Lady Only concept, Bow emphasizes that coexistence in a diverse society requires respect for differences, empathy, and an understanding of why specific communities need dedicated safe spaces.
  • Bow hopes to see safe spaces expand beyond major cities to other provinces and believes WorldPride will be an opportunity for Thailand to show its potential as a welcoming “home for all.”

Bow–Tidarat Khumpapong, Co-founder and owner of Goddess Bar, shares how organizing parties for a specific community led to the creation of a safe space in the heart of Bangkok. More than a place to socialize, Goddess Bar is a community where all women—especially sapphic and women-loving-women (WLW) communities—can come together and confidently be themselves. In the past, spaces where women who loved women could gather openly were limited.

Only a few years ago, many women who loved women were less visible because of traditional cultural expectations and social constraints. Today, Thai society has become significantly more open. Social acceptance continues to grow, marriage equality has strengthened security for same-gender couples, and seeing those couples hold hands in public has become increasingly ordinary. These developments reflect Thailand’s readiness to host WorldPride and demonstrate that the country offers not only color, energy, and celebration, but also the warmth and safety of a “home” for everyone.

In managing Goddess Bar, Bow has also encountered challenges surrounding the Lady Only concept. The space is intended exclusively for women so they can feel confident, safe, and less concerned about harassment, with clear entry conditions and security measures in place. Although the concept has sometimes raised questions about equality or exclusion, Bow emphasizes that coexistence in a diverse society requires more than “acceptance.” It must also be grounded in respect for differences and an understanding of why specific communities need dedicated safe spaces.

Ten years ago, many women who loved women were familiar with the terms tom and dee, while words such as “sapphic” and “lesbian” were not as widely used as they are today.

As society changes, language changes with it. Bow encourages everyone to gradually open their minds, continue learning, and respect one another’s identities—regardless of which words people use to describe themselves—because understanding will always matter more than labels. When people practice empathy and respect the rules and boundaries of each space, society becomes more inclusive and supportive. This understanding can also lead to tangible LGBTQIAN+ benefits and protections within organizations.

Bow believes safe spaces should not be limited to major cities such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or Phuket. Community hubs and similar models should expand to other provinces, including Thailand’s Northeastern region, to support younger generations in local communities. Bow also hopes to change public perceptions of bars and nightlife businesses by designing Goddess Bar as a multipurpose space for all women—whether they are WLW or heterosexual women—who want to step away from the noise, work, unwind, or simply spend time alone in a place where they feel safe.

For Bow, a beautiful world is one painted in many different colors, not just a single shade. WorldPride is therefore an important opportunity to show the world that Thailand is ready to be a welcoming “home for all,” opening its doors so everyone can live safely, be fully themselves, and take pride in who they are.

Bow–Tidarat Khumpapong is the Co-founder and owner of Goddess Bar, transforming a social venue into a safe space and community for women. Bow champions respect for diversity, the expansion of safe spaces to communities beyond major cities, and Thailand’s readiness to welcome people from around the world on the road to WorldPride.
