Art, Photography, and Humanity: ‘Surapui–Surachai Saengsuwan’ Harnesses the Power of Diversity and Positions Thailand as a Safe Space on the Global Stage

- Surapui–Surachai Saengsuwan, professional fashion photographer and founder of Crimson Studio

  • Surapui sees art and photography as tools for reflecting identity, amplifying people’s voices, and fostering understanding in society. Surapui also helped establish Queer Art Thailand to create space for LGBTQIAN+ artists.
  • For more than eight years, Surapui has worked with the Down syndrome community, fetish communities, and plus-size people to affirm that diversity exists in every community and everyone deserves space to express their potential without limits.
  • Surapui defines art as the values, meaning, and perspectives through which people live. Everyone can use their expertise to drive society forward across politics, law, and the economy.
  • Surapui believes Thailand offers an environment where people of diverse identities can thrive and has the potential to become a safe space that presents gender diversity as an ordinary part of being human.

Surapui–Surachai Saengsuwan, a professional fashion photographer and founder of Crimson Studio, drives social change through the lens and mass communication. Surapui believes that art and photography do more than document beauty or offer emotional comfort; they are also vital tools for reflecting identity, amplifying the voices of diverse communities, and fostering understanding in society. This vision led Surapui to help establish Queer Art Thailand, a network that creates space for LGBTQIAN+ artists.

For more than eight years, Surapui has dedicated themself to working with the Down syndrome community and identity-based groups, including fetish and plus-size communities. This work encourages society to recognize that gender diversity also exists within vulnerable communities and among people with Down syndrome. In collaboration with Bangkok Pride, Surapui has created opportunities for young people to join the parade and showcase their abilities onstage, as well as bringing young people with Down syndrome to perform on drag queen stages such as Thailand Dragstar—creating space for expression without boundaries. These experiences show that society is developing a deeper understanding and beginning to identify ways to integrate diversity into policy and year-round activity planning.

In Surapui’s view, “art” is not limited to painting, music, or fashion; it also encompasses each person’s values, sense of meaning, and perspective on life. Whether someone is an engineer, banker, or economist, everyone can use their specialized skills and expertise as an “art” for driving society forward. Taiwan Pride offers a similar model, with clearly defined advocacy streams across politics, law, and the economy that work together to build momentum for social change.

From a human resource management perspective, Surapui compares human growth to caring for a tree, which needs the right balance of soil, water, and sunlight. Surapui sees Thailand as a place whose context and environment support the growth and harmonious coexistence of people across all LGBTQIAN+ identities—including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and others. This gives Thailand the potential to become a safe space where everyone can express themselves and share their views authentically, without fear.

Diversity extends far beyond the rainbow flag. Everyone in society—regardless of gender or whether they are introverted or extroverted—has their own shades and inherent value. Thailand is therefore ready to serve as a model for the global community, both as a safe place to live and as a welcoming destination for people from countries where gender expression remains restricted. Surapui hopes Thailand’s global stage can become the starting point for a new public image—one in which gender diversity is understood as an ordinary part of being human—while sustainably opening doors of opportunity for LGBTQIAN+ communities worldwide.

Surapui–Surachai Saengsuwan is a professional fashion photographer and founder of Crimson Studio who uses art, photography, and communication to amplify the voices of diverse communities—including LGBTQIAN+ artists, people with Down syndrome, fetish communities, and plus-size people. Surapui advocates for Thailand to become a safe space where everyone can express themselves, thrive, and participate equally in driving social change.
