About the Pride
Khemarat Pride
Khemarat Pride is an event celebrating Pride Month, held in Khemarat District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, a small town along the Mekong River. The event was initiated and organized by the Khemarat Creative City Collective in collaboration with local residents, young people, and community partners. First launched in 2022, it has become one of the pioneering community-based Pride events in provincial Thailand, inspiring grassroots movements for LGBTQ+ rights and creating positive momentum for conversations about gender and sexual diversity in local communities.
Key Highlights and Core Concept
The spirit of Khemarat Pride is captured in its defining message: “Because Diversity Is Not Just for the City.” The event aims to bring the movement for LGBTQ+ rights and diversity into local communities, ensuring that it is not confined to major cities or Bangkok. It emphasizes creating safe spaces for self-expression, embracing differences, and fostering mutual understanding between younger and older generations in this border community.
Integrating Diversity with Local Culture
In organizing the event, the team takes a thoughtful approach to weaving gender and sexual diversity into the town’s traditional identity and cultural heritage. Key activities take place along Khemarat Thani Walking Street, a popular local tourist destination, and include a Pride parade, traditional Thai and local attire, cultural performances, and public discussions and forums.
Through this approach, Khemarat Pride has become a model for community-based Pride events, bringing together human rights, human dignity, and the collective power of local communities in a meaningful and harmonious way.
